This is not a full step-by-step… just a run down and my experiences while the jailbreak install was happening.
Here are the quicksteps at jailbreaking your iPhone:
- Make sure your Firmware is the correct version.
- Download QuickPwn.
- Run the application (follow the instructions carefully). It took me three tries to get it right.
- Let the phone reboot.
- Some install happens on the phone.
- Then it reboots again.
Now this is where I became a little concerned. I left my phone sit attached to my computer for what seemed like 5 minutes, and it didn’t leave the boot screen. I thought maybe I screwed up and needed to unplug the phone after the flash was complete. I freaked.
I reset the phone again and re-launched QuickPwn. I made it through the instructions correctly on my first try this time and after the QuickPwn screen went to “Finished”, I detached my phone. It continued on; did some install process; and then went to the boot logo again. It stayed on that screen for what felt like 10 minutes this time. Now I really freaked. I thought my phone was bricked. I started searching the internet for other people with similar experiences out there and it wasn’t looking good.
So, the third time’s a charm, correct? I went at it one more time. This time I figured I’d let it sit all night long, since it was probably dead anyways. I went through the same steps and left it connected to my computer this time again because it never said to remove the phone after running QuickPwn. As I sat and began thinking-up stories in my head about how I can “fix” my phone to the way it was before I started this process… I heard my computer beep a couple of times. It was the beeping sound of removing/adding USB devices. Even though, this whole time, I still only saw the boot logo on my phone.
But, those sounds game me hope. It implied that the phone was actually doing something. Maybe 10-15 minutes after the flash process started, my phone started up. Everything was there… podcasts, applications, mail, contacts, visual voicemail, everything!! And… I also then saw the Cydia and Installer app. installers.
Did it really take 15 minuntes? I don’t know. It definitely felt like it. So be patient and let the install process finish.
What next, do you ask? My main motivation for Jailbreaking was to be able to use my phone as a modem. There are a number of options there… so that may be worthy of my next post.
